The carbon casing has a net weight of 2.6 kg and a size of 14x15x31 cm. It will hold cameras up to 17 cm long. The composite material of carbon fibre and epoxy resin, well-known from formula one racing and light aircrafts, is as hard as steel while offering the benefits of a synthetic material. It is rot-proof, long-lasting and not affected by salt water or UV rays.
The camcorder is controlled via a cable or infrared remote control inside the casing. It is offered for camcorders by Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC. This flexibility allows all camcorders to be operated. After switching cameras updating/exchanging the control will set it up for the new camcorder, if necessary. Recordings can be viewed with a 3.6″ TFT colour monitor. It is powered via rechargeable battery and features a run time of 8 hours. LEDs indicate the battery charge level, reminding the user to recharge in due time. A 3.5″ high resolution TFT is optionally available. This monitor captivates with a greater viewing angle and non-reflective images in the sun.
Mounting the camcorder inside the underwater casing is quite simple. On a tabletop it is simply secured with a tripod screw and positioned in the centre of the port pane. As typical for universal casings, wide angle or macro adapters are screwed to the camcorder lens inside the casing. Changing adapters under water is thus not possible. To compensate for this drawback of the universal casing the company BS Kinetics optionally offers an expansion set for this casing. This allows an M67mm tapping holder to be attached in front of the casing. The camera position inside the casing is established by an anchor. This trick allows a universal casing to be turned into a camera specific casing and exchange accessory lenses under water. The casing can be changed back to universal style at any time.
The underwater housing has two secured quick release latches for efficient opening and closing of the underwater housing. One main O-ring seals the two halves of the housing. Thanks to innovative lip design, this O-ring does not need to be greased.
Low maintenance involves simple cleaning with water, after which the underwater housing can be simply and safely closed again.
Every single housing manufactured is tested to a standard immersion depth of 80 metres. As with all underwater housings made by BS Kinetics, the tested immersion depth can be increased to 160 metres, without any additional weight gain or change in geometry to the housing being required.
